拍品描述
A PALE GREEN AND RUSSET JADE EAR CUP, HAN DYNASTYChina, 206 BC-220 AD. Of elliptical form, with deep rounded sides supported on an oval foot, flanked by a pair of handles incised to the top with delicate C-scrolls. The translucent stone is of a pale green hue with russet-brown veins and patches as well as few tiny dark gray specks.Provenance: A private collection in Switzerland. The private collection of Jules Speelman, London, acquired from the above via the French trade. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, light scratches, and few tiny nibbles.Weight: 108.7 g Dimensions: Length 10 cmThis ear-shaped cup belongs to a type that was widespread during the Han period. Such vessels were inspired by pottery and lacquered wooden bowls commonly produced between the 5th century BC and the 3rd century AD. For a related example dated to the Warring States period, see the cup in the Tokyo National Museum, accession number TJ-5664.This type of vessel was highly prized and costly. Contemporary writings advised that everyday utensils should not be used in funerary rites, which is why many burial goods were crafted as imitations of the objects once used by the deceased. Such pieces adorned the tombs of the aristocracy. This cup is an excellent example—not only for its refined workmanship, but also for its use of jade, a material reserved for the wealthiest families.Literature comparison: Compare a related double-eared jade cup, dated to the Western Han dynasty, 9.9 cm long, in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, accession number 故玉005587N000000000.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 31 May 2017, lot 2740 Price: HKD 1,187,500 or approx.
