A LARGE PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A WARRIOR, TANG DYNASTYScientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art at Oxford University (the predecessor of Oxford Authentication) on 7 November 1988, based on sample number 466q33, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 1000 and 1700 years ago, consistent with the dating of this lot. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 618-907. Well-proportioned, standing in contrapposto on a rockwork plinth, with arms raised in a combative posture alongside his body and fists clenched. The figure dressed in layered armor with beast-mask epaulets, over a long tunic that cascades in subtly carved folds over the legs, while the head is held high and displays a fearsome expression, characterized by defiant eyes beneath furrowed brows, surmounted by a pointed helmet with upturned earflaps.Provenance: S Marchant & Son, London, by 1988. An old private collection in Germany, acquired from the above on 31 May 1990 and thence by descent. A copy of the invoice from Marchant (Marchanson Limited), signed by Richard P. Marchant, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of GBP 11,500 or approx. EUR 33,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. S Marchant & Son was founded in 1925 by Samuel Sydney Marchant (1897-1975). It held a large stock of Asian art, but also dealt in arms and armor, paintings, and continental porcelain. In 1953, Richard Marchant joined his father and from that time onwards the partnership specialized in Asian art. Nowadays the company's focus is on Imperial Chinese Ming and Qing porcelains, jades, cloisonné, pottery, and works of art. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, firing irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, old repairs and touchups as generally expected from authentic Tang dynasty excavations. Losses to ancient pigments, small nicks, shallow surface scratches.Weight: 10.1 kgDimensions: Height 90 cmPottery figures created for burial in the tombs of princesses and officials vividly reflect aspects of elite life during the expansive and multicultural Tang dynasty. This armored guardian, with a haughty and impenetrable expression, stands upon a rocky plinth and was likely positioned near the burial chamber to ward off potential evil. One hand turns downward and the other upward, both clenched in fists, suggesting a weapon once held. The figure wears multilayered parade armor, including a helmet with upturned earflaps, neck and shoulder guards, scalloped breast and backplates fastened with knotted cords over a tunic with a pleated hem, flared elbow cuffs over long, fitted sleeves, and protective leggings beneath a sweeping skirt. Each component of this elaborate attire was meticulously modeled in clay before firing and subsequently enriched with pigments. Because cold pigments are more susceptible to deterioration than fired glazes, only traces of the most intricate patterns remain, yet they reveal the elegant decoration that once enhanced the powerful presence of this fierce guardian.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related smaller painted pottery figure of a tomb guardian, dated to the Tang dynasty, in the Musée Cernuschi, Paris, inventory number M.C. 5598.
