Weight: 8,620 g (total)Dimensions: Height 22.8 cm (each)The figures comprising the present lot belong to a category of objects traditionally known as mingqi, a term referring to ancient Chinese burial goods. Mingqi were intended to provide the deceased with necessities and comforts in the afterlife. According to traditional belief, the corporeal soul (po) remained within the realm of the tomb, while the spiritual soul known as 'hun' ascended to heaven. To appease and sustain the po, objects that were meaningful or valued during life were placed within the burial chamber. The placement of mingqi in the tomb was understood within the Confucian worldview as an act of cosmic harmonization, establishing balance by ensuring the well-being of the deceased in the earthly realm while the 'hun' attained repose in the celestial sphere. Mingqi encompassed a wide range of objects, including everyday utensils, musical instruments, weapons, armor, and personal items, as well as symbolic figurative images, including soldiers, servants, and musicians.Literature comparison:Compare a related group of three painted pottery figures depicting a dancer and two musicians, Han dynasty, 1st century BC to 1st century AD, 13.7 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1994.605.85a-c.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Amsterdam, 10 May 2000, lot 170 Price: NLG 11,702 or approx.
