拍品描述
Expert's note: The small circular bosses applied to the side of both the box and the cover served as alignment marks, ensuring that the lid was returned to the body in the same orientation after each use. Such practical features are occasionally encountered on functional containers intended for repeated handling, particularly boxes used to store valuable or frequently accessed substances such as cosmetics or medicinal compounds. By marking the correct position of the lid, the user could quickly align the two elements and ensure that the carefully fitted cover seated properly. This subtle yet purposeful detail underscores the utilitarian character of the box, ensuring that the contents are not subject to unnecessary exposure to air, dust, or moisture.China. Robustly potted, of circular form, supported on a gently tapered foot and surmounted by a shallow, domed cover. The box and the cover each applied on one side with a small circular boss to ensure alignment. The surface covered overall in a thick, lustrous black glaze, subtly thinning to a dark brown tone at the edges and falling irregularly toward the unglazed base. The interior similarly left unglazed, revealing the buff-colored ware.Provenance: From the private collection of William F. C. Ohly, London, United Kingdom, and thence by descent. William Ferdinand Charles Ohly (1883-1955) was a British collector of ethnographic art and an early pioneer in the appreciation of tribal and non-European art in the United Kingdom. In the 1940s he established the Berkeley Galleries and the Abbey Art Centre and Museum, both of which became significant centers for the study and presentation of Asian and other non-Western artistic traditions over the following three decades. After his death in 1955, direction of the gallery passed to his son, Ernest Ohly (d. 2008), known within the family as 'Ernie the Dealer', who developed an international reputation as a London-based dealer in early and non-Western art, remaining at the head of the institutions founded by his father until 1977. A 16th-century Benin bronze head from Ernest's collection, acquired by William Ohly, and displayed in 1947 at the Berkely, locked in the vaults of Barclays Bank in London for 63 years, became known as the 'Ohly Head', one of the most valuable Benin Bronzes ever sold at a purported ten million pounds.Condition: Very good condition with old wear, traces of use, firing irregularities including small glaze pulls, occasional shallow chips.Weight: 225.2 gDimensions: Diameter 9.2 cmAuction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 17 September 2010, lot 1332Price: USD 4,000 or approx.
