拍品描述
Expert's note:The meiping, literally “plum vase,” is one of the most iconic forms in Chinese ceramics. Its characteristic profile first emerged during the Tang dynasty. The shape was then slowly refined in the Song dynasty, when potters emphasized harmonious proportions and an elegant, balanced silhouette. Originally intended to hold a single branch of plum blossom, the form combined practical function with aesthetic restraint. By the Yuan dynasty it had become firmly established as a classic vessel type. The present lot is an excellent example of the perfected form, displaying the graceful proportions for which the meiping is so admired.China, 960-1368. Well potted with a spreading foot rising to high, sharply angled shoulders and surmounted by a short waisted neck with an everted rim. Covered overall in a lustrous black glaze suffused with fine russet speckles extending into the interior and stopping well above the deeply recessed base, revealing the buff-colored ware.Provenance: The Property of a Gentleman. Christie's London, 10 December 1982, lot 506, sold for GBP 1,529 (or approx. EUR 5,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). A distinguished private collection in London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. The base with two old labels, '83' and '1142'. A copy of an invoice from Christie's London, dated 13 December 1982, accompanies this lot.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and manufacturing irregularities including a firing crack to the base, dark spots, few burst bubbles, the foot with minute chips.Weight: 2,373 g Dimensions: Height 29.5 cmWine played an important role in daily life during the Song Dynasty. The meiping reflects this significance, as vessels of this type were also used for wine storage during this period. Wine would typically have been poured from a large example of such a vase into a smaller yuhuchunping, from which it could be further distributed into cups or bowls for drinking.Literature comparison:Compare a related black-glazed meiping vase, dated Song-Yuan dynasty, approx. 1200-1400, 38.1 cm high, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number B60P389.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 2 July 2021, lot 5087 Price: HKD 151,200 or approx. EUR 18,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A Cizhou black-glazed meiping, Song dynasty Expert remark: Compare the related form, similar black glaze, and similar size (31 cm).
