A 'ROBIN'S EGG' GLAZED SNUFF BOTTLE, 1800-1880China. Of compressed globular form, supported on a short, oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck, the body covered in a finely mottled robin's egg glaze save for the base and lip.Provenance: Collection of E. Lloyd Noakes. Susan Page, November 2018, lot 50. An English private collection, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. E. Lloyd Noakes (1925-2008), born on a farm in Nebraska, served in the U.S. Navy before relocating to Los Angeles, where he worked in the film industry. A prominent figure in the early days of snuff bottle collecting, he was a key member of the 'old guard' and served as President of the Snuff Bottle Collectors of Southern California in 1976. Noakes was also actively involved in the China Society of Los Angeles and The Antiquarian Group of Los Angeles, founded by Gregor Norman-Wilcox, Curator of Decorative Arts at LACMA. His collection encompassed a wide range of Asian art, including thumb rings, monochrome glass, and snuff bottles, among other items. Susan Page is a snuff bottle dealer who worked for leading Chinese Snuff Bottle Specialist Robert Hall for 31 years before branching out on her own. Born near Burghley House, home to the Marquess of Exeter, and its outstanding collection of snuff bottles, she studied History of Art in St. Andrews University in Scotland and is currently a Board Member of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society and Co-Editor of the Snuff Bottle Society Journal. While working for Robert Hall, she met Lloyd Noakes and became good friends. After his death, she was contacted by Noakes' partner, to sell and catalog his snuff bottle collection.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities includig minor fritting around the lip. The cabochon reattached with remnants of adhesive.Stopper: Rodochrosite cabochon on a tiger eye platelet, carved spoonWeight: 45.2 gDimensions: Height including stopper 74 mm. Diameter neck 16 mm and mouth 6 mm.Hugh Moss, in his introduction to Treasury, Volume 6: Arts of the Fire (p. 49), observes that monochrome porcelain bottles were relatively rare during the 18th century, with larger-scale production only emerging in the 19th century. This shift was driven by the increased demand from the general public, who sought functional and simple containers for their snuff. The 'Robin's egg' glaze represents a significant technical innovation of the Yongzheng period (1723-35) attributable to Tang Ying (1682-1756), the greatest porcelain superintendent in Chinese history. The Yongzheng Emperor, who initiated many revivals of earlier ceramic techniques, was particularly enamored with the variegated Jun glazes of the Song and Ming dynasties. In order to have the glazes recreated or imitated, Tang Ying sent his trusted assistant from the imperial kilns in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, on study trips to the Jun region in Henan province to learn from the local potters and even went as far as having ceramic raw materials mined in the Jun area transported over thousands of kilometers to Jingdezhen. Among the many types of glazes derived from those efforts are mottled purple ones such as the flambé variety, and mottled turquoise ones such as 'robin's egg', which Tang Ying termed lu Jun or Oven Jun, i.e., a Jun glaze fired in low-temperature ovens instead of high-temperature kilns (see Jingdezhen Institute of Ceramic Archaeology et al, The Cultures of Porcelain Superintendents and Jingdezhen, conference volume, Nanchang, 2011). The 'robin's egg' glaze is mentioned on a stele in Jingdezhen, inscribed by Tang Ying, as one of the major types of ceramics that he succeeded in firing and proposed as suitable for regular delivery to the Imperial court. Its color is described as intermediate between the glazes of the Shiwan kilns of Foshan, Guangdong, and those used by the Yixing kilns in Jiangsu for their zisha tea pots, but having a better and more beautiful flow.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 28 November 2011, lot 110Price: HKD 56,250 or approx.
