拍品描述
China, c. 1900. The compressed ovoid body is raised on three cabriole legs issuing from mythical beast heads, flanked by a pair of dragon handles suspending loose rings, and surmounted by a domed cover with a powerful Buddhist lion finial. The finely polished, translucent stone is of a vibrant apple-green tone with splashes of emerald green, lavender, and pale ochre.Provenance: Chinese Arts & Crafts, Hong Kong. A private collection in Hong Kong, acquired from the above. Chinese Arts & Crafts Ltd., established in 1959, has long been renowned for its excellence in the sale of fine jewelry and Chinese works of art. Over the decades, the gallery has attracted an international clientele that includes numerous distinguished figures, among them Hillary Clinton, former First Lady of the United States, and Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. The stone with natural fissures and inclusions. The wood stand with traces of use and small losses to inlays.Weight: 6,8 g (excl. stand), 7,9 (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 26.2 cm (incl. cover), 32 cm (incl. stand)With a matching silver wire-inlaid wood stand, dating from the same period. (2)The present lot is an exceptionally large and spectacular example of apple-green (feicui) jadeite. The artist has contrasted large areas of smooth undecorated surface with smaller areas of superbly detailed carving. The Buddhist lion surmounting the lid and the masks on the handles and legs were symbolic guardians, most frequently seen flanking the entrances of important Ming and Qing buildings. Like white jade, feicui was a highly prized color during the nineteenth century and continues to be so today.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related jadeite tripod censer with cover, dated to the 19th century, 26.7 cm high, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 92.103.22a, b.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's London, 9 November 2011, lot 337 Price: GBP 37,250 or approx.
