拍品描述
Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana on an ornate double-lotus pedestal with finely beaded rims and holding his hands in dharmachakra mudra. Wearing the simple robes of a monk, his face with painted features, bearing a serene expression with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, slender lips forming a calm smile, a dimpled chin, and a central urna beneath his hairline, neatly arranged tight curled nodes with remnants of blue pigment encompassing a raised ushnisha. The base is sealed and decorated with a double-vajra symbol.Inscriptions: To the back of the base, the number '39'.Provenance: From a private collection in Belgium.Condition: Very good condition with old wear, expected casting flaws, small nicks and losses, minuscule dents, rubbing to gilding, and remnants of pigment.Weight: 850.7 g Dimensions: Height 15.3 cmThis finely cast and richly gilt image depicts the nirmankaya form of the tathagata Vairocana. Vairocana is considered a celestial or primordial Buddha and represents the dharma body of the historical Buddha. Vairocana is also seen as the embodiment of the Buddhist concept of sunyata, emptiness, and is one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, which represent the five qualities of the Buddha. In this respect, Vairocana stands for Buddha's all-encompassing wisdom.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 23 March 2022, lot 420 Price: USD 11,340 or approx. EUR 11,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A gilt-bronze figure of a Buddha, Tibet, 15th-16th century Expert remark: Compare the related modeling, manner of casting, and subject. Note the size (17.8 cm). Note also that this bronze was identified as either the nirmankaya form of Vairocana or the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, as the iconography is complicated by the presence of a vajra on the top of the base.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 14 March 2016, lot 30 Price: USD 25,000 or approx.
