拍品描述
Cast seated in lalitasana on a double-lotus base with beaded edges, she is depicted with the hands held in varada and vitarka mudra, the oval face framed by a pair of pendulous earlobes, the head adorned with a foliate crown enclosing a tall chignon, wearing a dhoti and a loose shawl over the shoulders, her right foot supported on a lotus pad growing from a leafy stem, and the chest adorned with necklaces neatly inlaid with coral and turquoise. The base sealed with a copper plate.Provenance: From the collection of Princess Niloufar Pahlavi, acquired together with her other Buddhist figures in the sale as a group collection in Paris circa 1985. H.R.H. Princess Niloufar Pahlavi (born 1953) was a member of the Iranian royal family and an active cultural patron and collector, particularly during the later 20th century. As a niece of His Imperial Majesty the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, she moved within international aristocratic and artistic circles, where she developed a refined taste for fine art, decorative arts, and luxury objects. When she moved to Paris with her husband in the 1980s, she assembled an eclectic and sensitive collection housed in a discreet Parisian H?tel Particulier, which was decorated by Jacques Grange in the early 2000s. Condition: Good condition with some old wear, casting irregularities including minor pitting to base, little rubbing to gilt, few tiny nicks and light dents. The inlay stones are later replacements. One earring and the lotus flowers at the shoulders lost.Weight: 767 g Dimensions: Height 16.5 cmGreen Tara, also known as Shyamatara, is venerated as a savior and liberator from samsara, the earthly realm of birth and rebirth. According to Buddhist mythology, Green Tara emerged from a lotus bud rising from a lake of the tears of Avalokiteshvara, shed for the suffering of all sentient beings. She embodies compassion in a dynamic form, hence the usual depiction of the goddess with right leg outstretched, ready to leap out to ease suffering.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Koller, Zurich, 29 October 2013, lot 120 Price: CHF 27,600 or approx.
