拍品描述
Elegantly cast, seated in lalitasana on a double-lotus base with a beaded edge, her pendent right leg supported by a separate lotus blossom stemming from the base. Her right hand held in in varadamudra extending down her leg and her left raised in prithvi mudra. Wearing a dhoti with the folds elegantly spilling over the base and adorned with beaded jewelry and various sashes. The face with bow-shaped mouth, heavy-lidded eyes, and gently arching brows, flanked by ears with pendulous lobes issuing large earrings, surmounted by a delicate five-leaf tiara. The base sealed with a copper plate and its lower back incised with a single Tibetan character.Provenance: French trade. European private collection, acquired from the above. Condition: Good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities including casting patches. Minute nicks and light surface scratches, few small fissures, small losses, dings, and rubbing to the painted hair. Minor warping. The lotus blossoms at the shoulders and the inset aureole lost.Weight: 834 g Dimensions: Height 20 cmGreen Tara, also known as Shyamatara, is venerated as a savior and liberator from Samsara, the earthly realm of birth and rebirth. According to Buddhist mythology, Green Tara emerged from a lotus bud rising from a lake of the tears of Avalokiteshvara, shed for the suffering of all sentient beings. She embodies compassion in a dynamic form, hence the usual depiction of the goddess with right leg outstretched, ready to leap out to ease suffering. Her right hand is always held out in varada mudra, a gesture of compassion and charity.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 14 May 2013, lot 136Price: GBP 35,000 or approx.
