AN INSCRIBED BRONZE STUPA, KADAMPA STYLE, TIBET, 16TH CENTURY OR EARLIERExpert's note: The square harmika above the dome bears the well-known 'Buddha Eyes' on all four sides, replicating the eyes of the Svayambhu (Self-Born) Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal. The motif is generally believed to have emerged following the stupa's reconstruction during the Malla period in the 15th century. As noted by Dina Bangdel, “[t]he Great Stupa, an impressive architectural monument inhabiting a prominent hilltop in the Kathmandu Valley, is the premier religious center of the Newar Buddhist community. It is therefore not surprising that Svayambhu Mahachaitya serves as the stylistic and symbolic prototype of all chaityas, which are regarded at once as replicas and manifestations of the sacred monument." Huntington and Dina Bangdel, The Circle of Bliss: Buddhist Meditational Art, 2003, p. 111)Finely cast, the domed body rising from a double-lotus frieze with beaded rim and supporting the stepped harmika, surmounted by a tapered parasol, a canopy, and a lotus bud finial. The bell is finely engraved with four directional Buddhas divided by vajras, above a band of alternating bells and vajras, the harmita similarly decorated with eye motifs, all framed by minutely beaded rims.The base sealed with a circular copper plate incised with a mantra in Lantsa script at the edge and a central double vajra.Provenance: Dutch trade. Acquired from an old private estate in Amsterdam, Netherlands.Condition: Very good condition with old wear and expected casting irregularities. Light warping, few small dents, minuscule nicks, shallow surface scratches, remnants of ancient ritual pigment. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, warm patina.Weight: 1,553 gDimensions: Height 22.4 cmThe present early stupa form was popular among the Kadam and Kagyu orders of Tibetan Buddhism, and its smooth buttery patina indicates significant age. This distinctive type is traditionally associated with the monk Atisha, who came to Tibet from India in the eleventh century to found the Kadampa sect and played a pivotal role in spreading Buddhism throughout the Himalayas. Its form is said to be modeled on a stupa he personally carried and it remained consistent through the fifteenth century. Although the type originated earlier in India and was often depicted in Indian art, it became closely linked with the Kadampa tradition that was introduced to Tibet in the 11th century. Two monumental Kadam stupas survive in the Nyethang Tara Temple near Lhasa, founded by Atisha, while smaller examples appear in many Tibetan temples and monasteries.In Tibet, stupas (chorten) are used to store the cremated remains of spiritually attained lamas. They are also created as offerings to monasteries that generate karmic merit for a donor. The lama blesses and consecrates the interior, giving it vitality and making it auspicious. Stupas were originally memorial monuments built over the mortal remains of the Buddha Shakyamuni and other important figures.
