拍品描述
A PAIR OF SILVER-MOUNTED AND FINELY PAINTED WOOD SUTRA COVERS, TIBET, 17TH CENTURYThe wooden book covers date from the 17th century and are finely painted in polychrome:-The first depicting Ratnasambhava seated in dhyanasana on a lotus throne, the right hand lowered in varada mudra and the torso adorned with beaded jewelry, framed by a red nimbus and attended by bodhisattvas, buddhas, and apsaras within a verdant landscape.-The second portraying Padmapani seated in dhyanasana holding a lotus stem, likewise surrounded by attendant bodhisattvas and enlightened beings within a similarly conceived landscape setting. The silver repoussé mounts date from 18th-19th century and are both of rectangular form.-The first is finely chased with a pair of confronted dragons, their sinuous scale-covered bodies terminating in flaming tails, the gaping jaws framed by flowing manes as they writhe amidst dense foliate scrollwork and converge upon a central conch shell.-The second is similarly worked with a stylized Garuda with outstretched wings and sharply defined eye above a curved beak, flanked by opposing lions and the Eight Auspicious Emblems arranged symmetrically among scrolling foliage. Both compositions are enclosed by borders of floral ornament and elongated lotus-petal bands. (2)Provenance: From an old private collection in Germany, assembled from 1970 onward and thence by descent.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, manufacturing irregularities, small dents and light tarnish to silver, little flaking and rubbing to pigments with few associated minor touchups, light scratches, minute nicks.Weight: 2,335 gDimensions: Length 38.5 cmThe majority of Tibetan manuscript covers are made of wood, fashioned in a large horizontal format to protect Buddhist texts. Many were elaborately carved and gilded, while a smaller number were adorned with hammered copper repoussé designs. These examples are especially prized, with most surviving specimens dating to the 12th-14th centuries (see one sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 2001, lot 113, for USD 49,350), when texts from eastern India were actively copied and transmitted to Tibet, shaping a developing Buddhist doctrinal landscape. Both the format and subject matter of Tibetan manuscripts reflect this historical connection to eastern Indian traditions, while their highly ornate style demonstrates Newari influence in metalworking and manuscript painting. The dragon motif—an emblem of auspicious power and protection—imbues the cover with both cosmological resonance and worldly prestige. Manuscript covers thus served not only as functional objects but also as potent symbols of erudition, underscoring the central role of manuscript culture in Tibet before the wide dissemination of printing. The present example further illustrates the diversity of Tibetan cover decoration, which could include motifs seemingly peripheral to Buddhist doctrine, such as dragons, phoenixes, or the Chinese character shou (longevity). It should be noted, however, that the format of Chinese sutra books differed from the Tibetan horizontal form, as seen in a 16th-century silk cover decorated with dragons in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2011.221.36.Literature comparison:Compare a related wood and parcel-gilt silver repoussé book cover with painted interior, Tibet, 18th-19th century, 45.5 cm long, sold at Michael Backman, London, no. 3653. Compare a related pair of Tibetan painted wood manuscript covers, dated approx. 1700, 65.4 cm long, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number 2007.70.a-.b. Compare a related pair of Nepalese painted wood manuscript covers, dated to the 17th century, 41.1 cm long, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 2004.757.4a and -.4b.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Zacke, Vienna, 17 October 2025, lot 282 Price: EUR 4,160 : A gilt copper repoussé sutra cover, Tibet, 18th-19th century Expert remark: Compare the related repoussé work, manner of painting, dragon motif, and size (36.6 cm).
