Expert's note: The carefully carved apertures within the piece suggest that it may have been designed to allow steam or incense smoke to rise through the top, indicating a possible function in ceremonial or incense-burning practices. The piece may also have once served as the cover of a large stone censer in a monastery, a temple, or even a palace.China, circa 15th-17th century. Finely carved, the crouching feline carved in a dynamic position against scrolling clouds, its rotund body with a meticulously delineated spine, short curling tufts of hair falling down its nape, and thick paws detailed with sharp claws below circular medallions. The face with a menacing expression, mouth open, baring teeth, ruyi-form snout, and protruding eyes under furrowed brows.Provenance: Weisbrod Chinese Art, New York, USA, acquired circa in the 1990s and held until 2007. Thereafter in an art storage facility in New Jersey, and deaccessioned in 2025. Michael B. Weisbrod is a noted scholar of Chinese art, who has published extensively on the subject over a time span of more than 50 years. In 1972, Michael joined his father Dr. Gerald Weisbrod's Asian art gallery in Toronto, Canada.
