拍品描述
China, 206 BC-220 AD. Finely cast, the cylindrical body is richly inlaid in silver alloy and crisply incised with two horizontal registers enclosing mythical beasts and animals—among them dragons, bears, and deer—framed by triple bowstring bands. The sides are applied with a pair of small taotie masks, each grasping a loose ring from which a handle is suspended by a rope-twist-decorated chain. The vessel is surmounted by a slightly domed cover, crowned with a small loop finial. Provenance: A private collection in Morayshire, Scotland, purchased from a local antique dealer who reputedly acquired the present lot from the family of Alexander Young of Angus (d. 1960), who worked in East Asia circa 1930-1950 as chief engineer for the Straits Steamship Company based in Singapore. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, showing expected wear and minor casting irregularities. Signs of prolonged burial are evident in the encrustations and areas of deeper corrosion, together with losses to the inlays, light nicks, surface scratches, and minor dents. Some remnants of old varnish. The bronze bears a fine, naturally developed patina accented by malachite encrustations. Weight: 1,316 g Dimensions: Height 26.1 cm Literature comparison: Compare a related bronze cylindrical container with handle, dated to the Warring States period, 23.3 cm high, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, accession number 002226N000000000. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 19 January 2023, lot 3029 Price: HKD 63,000 or approx. EUR 7,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A gold- and silver-inlaid bronze cylindrical box and cover, Han dynasty Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, manner of casting, decoration, and animal motifs. Note the much smaller size (9.5 cm) and that the silver inlays have been cleaned.
