拍品描述
Expert's note:Although numerous pottery figures of dancers have been excavated from Han dynasty tomb assemblages, the appearance of comparable imagery on bronze garment ornaments is exceedingly uncommon. In fact, belt hooks of this type incorporating fully developed figural decoration are exceptionally rare, since such objects were more typically embellished with stylized dragon motifs or restrained geometric patterns. The refined workmanship of the present example, most notably its thick and carefully set turquoise inlays, further indicates that it was conceived for inclusion in the costume of a high-ranking member of the elite, underscoring both its aesthetic sophistication and its status-defining function.China, circa 1st century BC-3rd century AD. Finely cast in openwork, the shaft of slightly arched form extending into a dancing figure with arms raised in a dynamic pose and face animated by a smiling expression, while the opposite terminal forms a hook rendered as a dragon head. The neatly gold-inlaid surface accented with thick turquoise inlays. The reverse cast with a circular button.Provenance: Collection of Asher Eskenazi, Paris, acquired in Hong Kong in or around 1990. Collection of Martin Doustar, Brussels, acquired from the above. Martin Doustar is a Brussels-based art dealer and collector, whose career spans more than two decades. He began his professional journey in the early 2000s with a focus on modern art, developing a keen interest in the ways early twentieth-century artists were influenced by primitive art from Africa and Oceania. Over time, his connoisseurship expanded into archaeological and ethnographic fields, with particular expertise in the ancient arts of the Pacific, Africa, and Pre-Columbian America, while also encompassing Asian material culture and modern masterpieces. He is the author of several catalogues and has organized thematic exhibitions on a wide range of subjects.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, corrosion and weathering, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, the turquoise inlays possibly partially replaced or reattached, small losses, rubbing and minor losses to gold inlays, small nicks, minute dents. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina, with vibrant malachite encrustations.Weight: 84.7 g (excl. stand), 140.2 g (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 11.3 cm (excl. stand), 15.7 cm (incl. stand)With an associated metal stand. (2)The gracefully dancing figure adorning this belt hook has been captured mid-movement in the performance of the long-sleeve dance known as 'chongxiu'. Until the close of the Warring States period, dance performances of this kind were regulated by law and confined to courtly banquets and ceremonial festivities of the aristocracy. During the Han dynasty, such restrictions were eased, and dance became more widely practiced and accessible beyond the strictly defined contexts of the earlier era.Literature comparison:Compare a related turquoise-inlaid gilt-bronze belt hook in the shape of a warrior and a leopard, dated to the Western Han dynasty, 3rd-1st century BC, 7.6 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2002.201.165. Compare a related turquoise-inlaid gilt-bronze belt hook, dated Eastern Han-Western Jin dynasty, 3rd century, 12.4 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1985.214.73.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 April 2023, lot 3603 Price: HKD 1,270,000 or approx.
