Seated in dhyanasana atop an elaborate pedestal supported by lions, raised on a lotus base atop a waisted plinth, the right hand lowered in varada mudra and his left holding the hem of his sanghati falling over the chest in finely incised rhythmic folds. His serene face with silver-inlaid almond-shaped eyes, deeply arched brows, and full lips forming a calm smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair in tight curls over the ushnisha.Provenance: Bruno Cooper Works of Art, Norwich, United Kingdom, 2008. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of the signed invoice from Bruno Cooper, dated 3 March 2008, dating the present figure to the 4th-6th century, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of GBP 3,500 or approx. EUR 6,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother's business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, corrosion, small nicks and losses, light dents, surface scratches. The bronze with a superb, naturally grown patina with malachite and cuprite encrustationWeight: 2,726 g Dimensions: Height 20 cmSurviving with an attractive green patina, this finely modeled sculpture is a classic Swat Valley rendition of Buddha Shakyamuni. Here, the historical Buddha sits on a rectangular throne, which is supported by two lions at the front corners. According to Pratapaditya Pal, placing Shakyamuni on such a throne associates him with royal imagery and emphasizes his spiritual sovereignty, while the lotus base symbolizes his divine quality (see Pal, Indian Sculpture, Vol.2, 1988, p. 68-69).The Swat Valley is located along the upper stream of the Indus in the heartland of the Gandhara region. It was a melting pot of various people and arts and served as a link between India and Central Asia and further eastwards for a constant flow of Buddhist pilgrims. The earlier Gandhara style is still echoed in the art of many icons of the Swat Valley, as visible in the present example. The Buddha's parallel folds as well as the protuberance on top of his head, can be traced back to Gandhara Buddha figures. However, the raised U-shaped pleats around his neck are associated with Kashmiri prototypes, as is the use of silver inlay. His face reflects a Gupta idiom, with its small mouth and incised eyebrows. The lotus base on which he sits is typical for Swat Valley images. Thus, this fine bronze Buddha figure perfectly embodies the aforementioned melting pot of various styles.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Swat bronze figure of Buddha in the National Museum, Karachi, Pakistan, illustrated in the Huntington Archive, scan number 9602.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 2 December 2021, lot 1007 Price: HKD 377,500 or approx.
