拍品描述
A BRONZE FIGURE OF SHIVA VINADHARA DAKSHINAMURTI, SOUTH INDIA, 18TH-19TH CENTURYExpert's note:Images of this type have been variously identified as Vinadhara Dakshinamurti or as Tripuravijaya, since the attributes once held in the principal hands—originally cast separately and later inserted—are now missing. In his form as Vinadhara Dakshinamurti, Shiva demonstrates yogic mastery, for in the Indian classical tradition, perfection in vocal and instrumental music is inseparable from control of breath and, ultimately, of the mind. As Tripuravijaya—a form that rose to prominence during the late Chola dynasty—Shiva embodies supreme power, reducing with a single flaming arrow the three demon cities to ashes. Most importantly, whether revealed as yogi or warrior, Shiva reminds his devotees of his omniscience.Sensitively cast and superbly modeled, the figure stands with one foot slightly advanced upon a lotus base set over a square plinth. The principal hands are likely poised to play the (now missing) vina, while the upper hands hold a battle-axe and an antelope. He is dressed in a short veshti secured with a belt and adorned with layered necklaces and the sacred quadruple thread. The face conveys a benevolent composure, with a gentle smile and elongated eyes. Rising above, the tall jatamukuta is surmounted by a skull and further embellished with a serpent and the crescent moon.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private estate near Lyon, France. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and expected casting irregularities. Few nicks, light scratches, little rubbing, losses to attributes. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, smooth patina with verdigris and encrustations mostly to interior.Weight: 5,116 g Dimensions: Height 39.8 cmShiva Vinadhara Dakshinamurti is one of four types of Dakshinamurtis, or supreme teachers of ultimate awareness, understanding, and knowledge. "Dakshinamurti" literally means "one who faces south," the direction associated with change, transformation, and renewal. In the aspect of Vinadhara, the player of the vina, Shiva expounds on the timeless principles of vocal and instrumental music, which is known to lead to liberation (moksha) without strain. In Indian philosophy music is comparable to yogic practice in that both involve the control of breath, mental absorption, and the ultimate release from all obsessions of the mind.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 17 March 2021, lot 431Price: USD 25,000 or approx.
