拍品描述
North India. The kard (dagger) hilt naturalistically carved in the form of a ram's head with curling horns framing pricked ears, the eyes neatly inlaid in gold and set with rubies, and a border of acanthus leaves framing the lower end. The semi-translucent stone is of a deep celadon color with reddish-brown patches and cloudy white inclusions.Provenance: From a private collection in Rajasthan, India. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few tiny chips, and remnants of adhesive to the lower section where the hilt was attached to the dagger. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into thin hairline cracks.Weight: 68.7 g Dimensions: Height 9.1 cmThe fine and expressive carving of this gazelle contrasts delicately worked eyes and cheeks with the sculptural piercing around the horns. Naturalistic and zoomorphic imagery flourished at the Mughal court from the reign of Emperor Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) onwards. The court's fascination with flora and fauna found expression not only in painting and drawing but also in the carved ornamentation of luxury objects, including dagger hilts and crutch handles fashioned from jade, rock crystal, and bone for elite patronage. As demonstrated by Cary Welch in his study of courtly figures depicted in the Windsor Padshahnama, the relatively small number of daggers fitted with animal-form hilts appear to have been reserved for princes as well as a select group of high-ranking dignitaries, underscoring their status as markers of privilege and rank within the Mughal court (Welch 1985, p. 257-8, esp. f.116b (fig.1) and f.71 (fig.2)).Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Mughal jade dagger with a similar ram's head hilt, dated 18th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 36.25.651. Compare a closely related Mughal jade fragment of a ram's head dagger hilt, dated 19th century, 3.7 cm long, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 696-1874.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's London, 29 April 2025, lot 44Price: GBP 15,240 or approx.
