A FINE INDIAN MINIATURE DEPICTING PARASHURAMA IN BATTLE WITH KARTAVIRYA ARJUNA, BIKANER, 18TH CENTURYIndia, Rajasthan. Opaque pigments and gold foil on paper. Depicting Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu, attacking the thousand-armed warrior Kartavirya Arjuna after the latter has robbed his father, the Brahman Jamadagni, who lies prostrate on the ground below. Above, the Cow of Plenty Surabhi escapes. The image is set within a lush landscape with a river in the lower register and bright blue skies above.Inscriptions: Inscribed to the back, 'Bikaner 18th century'.Provenance: With the Kunika Chemould Art Center, New Delhi, India (according to label). A French collector, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. Kekoo Gandhy (1920-2012) was an Indian art gallerist, art collector and art connoisseur, who pioneered the promotion of Indian modern art from the 1940s. He established Chemould Frames, a frame manufacturing business in 1941, soon he started displaying works of young modern artists K. H. Ara, S. H. Raza, K. K. Hebbar and M. F Husain in his showroom windows. Eventually Gallery Chemould, India's first commercial art gallery, was opened in 1963 on the first floor of the Jehangir Art Gallery. In 1965, he set up the Kunika Chemould Art Center above the Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath in Delhi to bring Bombay's artists into the national arena. Condition: Good condition with wear, little creasing, flaking to pigment, and tiny tears with associated losses. The sheet firmly mounted on passepartout. The back with browning, some soiling, and sections reinforced.Dimensions: Image size 24.6 x 16 cm, Size incl. frame 40.5 x 28 cmThis miniature from the Hindu epic Ramayana depicts the moment when Parashurama slays his father's murderer, Kartavirya Arjuna, with an axe. According to legend, Parashurama's father, the Brahman Jamadagni, possessed a divine cow whose abundant milk aroused the envy of King Kartavirya Arjuna. In his arrogance the king demanded the cow and, when refused, murdered Jamadagni and ordered his men to seize the animal.
