拍品描述
A FINE PICCHWAI FOR SHARAD PURNIMA, RAJASTHAN, 19TH CENTURYIndia, Nathdwara. Distemper and gilt on fine linen. Shri Nathji at center standing on a base and backed by a white screen, flanked by dancing gopis on either side, in the backdrop is a lush forest with mango trees laden with ripe fruits. Pictured in the star-filled sky above are Gods with their consorts in celestial vimanas, their gestures denoting both veneration and blessings. The lower register depicts the feast of the Annakut Festival and the Dana Lila. Gopas and gopis at lower left worshiping at a marble temple, Krishna teasing the gopis at lower right, flanked by white cows, all on the banks of a lotus-filled river at the bottom. The composition is framed by twenty-six scenes of Shri Nathji worship on three sides, mostly depicting darshan of Shri Nathji as it changes throughout the seasons of the year, enclosed within a red and blue floral border.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private estate near Paris, France. By repute in the same family for at least two generations. Condition: Very good condition with wear, minor creasing and folds, light fading, flaking to pigment, and some soiling, overall presenting superbly.Dimensions: Size 222 x 154 cmThis large painted textile (picchwai) is a backdrop for an idol of Shri Nathji, an image (nidhi-svarup) of Lord Krishna. These textiles are typically hung in the temple of the Pushtimarg sect in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, where the large Shri Nathji temple is located. The textiles were often created as a matched set that would cover the walls and the ceiling of the sanctum. Beyond Nathdwara, Shri Nathji holds special significance in Kota after Maharao Bhim Singh became a follower in 1719.This picchwai of Shri Nathji shows him being adored by his devotees on the annual autumn moon festival called Sharad Purnima. Especially commissioned for the occasion, the painting commemorates the Rasalila, or divine dance performed by Krishna and the gopis under the silvery moon. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related picchwai depicting Sharad Purnima, Nathadwara, Rajasthan, dated to the 19th century, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number S1992.24.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 27 September 2023, lot 525Price: USD 25,200 or approx.
