拍品描述
India. The Maharana stands facing right, holding a prism and wearing a peach-colored turban decorated with jewels and an aigrette, with a matching peach patka tied over his white jama. He appears assured, confident, and powerful, dressed in rich fabrics and adorned with jewelry rendered in thick impasto, giving the ornaments a striking sense of volume. The portrait's impressive physical size further enhances its grandeur.Inscriptions: To the bottom edge of the portrait, a single line of inscription in white gouache.Provenance: Gallery Chemould, New Delhi, India (according to label). Kekoo Gandhy (1920-2012) was an Indian gallerist, collector, and connoisseur who played a pioneering role in promoting modern Indian art from the 1940s onward. In 1941 he established Chemould Frames in Bombay. Soon thereafter he began displaying works by young modern artists, including K. H. Ara, S. H. Raza, K. K. Hebbar, and M. F. Husain, in the showroom windows. In 1963 he founded Gallery Chemould, widely regarded as India's first commercial art gallery, located on the first floor of the Jehangir Art Gallery in Bombay. Two years later, in 1965, he established the Kunika Chemould Art Center above the Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath in Delhi, helping to bring the artists of Bombay's modern art movement to a broader national audience. Condition: Some wear, minor creasing, scattered soiling, flaking to pigment, small tears along the edges with associated losses and repairs, and minor touchups.Dimensions: Image size 33.5 x 24 cm, Size incl. frame 54 x 42.5 cmMaharana Bhim Singh was an able but weak ruler with a tendency towards vanity, perhaps reflected in numerous portraits, such as this one, which were commissioned during his reign. He was also, according to James Tod, 'particularly obnoxious to female influence' and managed to father more than a hundred children, although only one son survived him.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams London, 7 October 2010, lot 330Price: GBP 2,880 or approx.
