A FINE BRONZE FIGURE OF VAJRAPANI ON A THRONE, JAVA, 10TH-11TH CENTURYIndonesia. Seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus throne finely detailed with extensive finial decoration, the hands raised and holding a vajra in his right and a lotus stem in the left that grows to a blossom at his left shoulder to support a Buddha. The body adorned in floral jewelry, armlets, and with a diaphanous sampot incised with bands of blossoms and tied around the waist by an elaborate belt. The oval face with a gentle expression, downcast eyes framed by subtle arched brows centered by an urna, all below a tall chignon centered to the front with a niche enclosing a Buddha. The backplate rendered in fine detail, featuring a pair of pillars flanked by a makara, elephant, and immortal with lion-form head, supporting the flaming mandorla above that rises from two makara heads. The tiered and stepped throne is detailed with scrolling flanges and centered by the figure of Amithaba.Provenance: An important and distinguished private collection in London, United Kingdom. Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, signs of weathering, encrustations, light warping, small losses and dents. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with extensive malachite encrustations.Weight: 3.7 kg (excl. stand), 6.8 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 29.5 cm (excl. stand), 31.4 (incl. stand)With an associated modern stand. (2)The present bronze incorporates numerous features consistent with the corpus of bronzes associated with the Nganjuk mandalas, notably the pronounced spiky ornamentation and richly elaborated jewelry. At the same time, certain characteristics suggest Central Javanese influence and possibly a slightly later date. These include the comparatively larger scale, more robust modeling of the figure, the reduced ornamentation on the arms, and the treatment of the makara heads on the backplate, whose elongated, curling lower lips represent a stylistic development beyond earlier, more restrained forms. Conversely, structural elements of the backplate, such as the articulated pillars and block-like architectural supports, find parallels in earlier 8th- to 9th-century Srivijaya examples, indicating continuity with established regional conventions. Compare a group of four related bronze figures of deities from a Vajradhatu (Diamond World) Mandala, Eastern Javanese period, last quarter of the 10th-first half of the 11th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object numbers 1987.142.5, .7-.9.Literature comparison:Compare a related copper alloy figure of Tara, Central Java, dated late 9th-10th century, 22.2 cm high, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, reference number M.73.4.13.
