拍品描述
A FINE BRONZE OF THE SEATED BUDDHA, MANDALAY STYLE, KONBAUNG DYNASTYBurma (Myanmar), 1752-1885. Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana atop a flaring pedestal centered by a lobed cartouche, uninscribed. His right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left held in dhyana mudra above the lap, wearing loose-fitting monastic robes gathering in frill-like folds at the top of the base and shoulder. The serene face sensitively modeled with a meditative expression marked by mother-of-pearl inlaid eyes with heavy sinuous lids and elegantly arched brows, his full bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes. The hair arranged in tight curls over the high-domed ushnisha and secured by a wide plain band.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from an estate sale in Paris, France. Condition: Very good condition with expected casting irregularities. Small dings, scattered nicks and scratches, small losses to the edge of the base, minor warping, and negligible surface corrosion. The inlays with touchups and possible replacements. The wear on this statue is particularly pleasing, rendering a soft shine and unctuous feel to the surface, and directly results from extended worship within its cultural context.Weight: 5,730 gDimensions: Height 38.5 cmThis finely cast image represents the high point of the Mandalay period (1857-1885) for traditional Burmese sculpture in technique and theme. The term refers to the final phase of Burmese royal art, named after the establishment of the last royal capital at Mandalay by King Mindon in 1857, which became the principal artistic and religious center of the kingdom. Here the historical Buddha Shakyamuni performs bhumisparshamudra, the gesture summoning the earth to witness his enlightenment against the evil temptations of the demon king Mara. While the treatment of the Buddha's robes conveys a quiver, as if shaken by the vibrations of his realization, it could also suggest the presence of the earth goddess, affirmed by virtue of the fluid swirls and folds of the garment stylized as cascades and waterfalls which merge into the flowing river of his hem.In the Tai regions, the earth deity is known as Nang Thoranee or Mae Thoranee: “lady earth” or “mother earth.” Unique to Southeast Asia, she is associated with water and waterfalls, arising from the amalgamation of indigenous traditions with Hindu-Buddhist beliefs.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze figure of a seated Buddha, Burma, dated by inscription 1901, 57 cm high, in the Asian Civilisations Museum, accession number 2014-00461.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Amsterdam, 1 July 2010, lot 760Price: EUR 5,000 or approx.
