拍品描述
A GEM-INSET UPAVITA GOLD CLASP, CENTRAL JAVA, 8TH TO EARLY 10TH CENTURYExpert's note:The term upavita derives from the Sanskrit upavīta and originally refers to something “worn over the shoulder.” In its strict ritual sense, it denotes the sacred thread worn diagonally across the torso, passing over the left shoulder and across the chest to the right side of the body. In religious usage, this thread is closely associated with initiation and ritual status. In the present context, “gem-inset upavita gold clasp” should therefore be understood as the clasp or fastening element of such a cross-body ornament, not a loose jewel in isolation, but a component from an elite body ornament.Indonesia. The sacred thread clasp of a lobed outline, made of solid gold sheet molded to the front with leafy vines and set with a large rock crystal cabochon amid semi-precious stones, flanked to either side by scrolling bands, and the reverse finely detailed with interlacing scrollwork on a punched ground. With apertures on the side for suspension.Provenance: From a private collection in Bergamo, Italy. Leonardo Vigorelli, Bergamo, Italy, acquired from the above. Leonardo Vigorelli, a retired Italian art dealer and renowned collector, once specialized in African and ancient Hindu-Buddhist art. With a background in anthropology and decades of travel and field research across India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and Africa, he founded the prestigious Dalton Somaré art gallery in Milan, now managed by his two sons. Condition: Very good condition with old wear, some of the gems lost, small losses, minute dents, few tiny cracks, encrustations.Weight: 42.7 g (excl. stand), 146 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Length 13.6 cm (excl. stand)With an associated stand. (2)Clasps of this type are frequently depicted adorning the figures of deities in ancient Javanese temple reliefs, where they secure the sacred thread across the torso. The practice of wearing a sacred thread as a marker of religious or social status was introduced to Java through early cultural and religious exchanges with India, and subsequently integrated into local iconographic traditions (Miksic, J., Old Javanese gold, 2011, New Haven, Connecticut: Yale University Press, pl. 63, p. 192-193).Literature comparison:Compare a closely related colored stone inset gold sacred thread clasp, dated 8th-early 10th century, 14 cm, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1998.544.39. Compare a closely related colored stone inset gold sacred thread clasp, dated 8th-early 10th century, 7.5 cm, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1998.544.461. Both were gifted from by Samuel Eilenberg-Jonathan P. Rosen to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
