拍品描述
A RITUAL 'HEVAJRA' BRONZE CONCH AND STAND, ANGKOR PERIODExpert's note: Primarily associated with the Hindu god Vishnu, the conch was used in both Hindu and Buddhist rituals in late 12th and early 13th century Khmer Empire, when a unique theology, incorporating various beliefs, developed as a result of the last of the great Hindu god-kings, Jayavarman VII, converting to Buddhism, after which Buddhist art flourished. Blown at the beginning of ceremonies, the instrument makes the sound of the sacred syllable “Om,” believed to purify the mind before meditation. The embellished bronze features a dancing, multiheaded Hevajra, a key deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, a sect that emphasizes ritual as a means to enlightenment.Khmer Empire, Bayon Style, 12th-13th century. This rare conch-shaped offering vessel retains its original tripod base, its feet cast in the form of the Garuda with its wings unfurled in protection.Well-cast with an impressive flaring tip in the form of a mythical bird head with a curved beak, bordered by beaded design, and the base naturalistically modeled with a whorl. The central panel decorated in relief with a depiction of an eight-headed dancing Hevajra, his arms radiating around him, and surrounded by an openwork scrolling mandorla. A copy of a signed authentication certificate from Het Magazijn, including a photograph of the present lot, and confirming the provenance and dating above, accompanies this lot.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Casting irregularities, extensive wear, signs of weathering and corrosion, soil encrustations, few small nicks and dings, small losses, rubbing, all as expected. The bronze with a smooth, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite and azurite encrustations.Weight: 409 g Dimensions: Height 24.5 cmHevajra is one of the principal tantric deities of Vajrayana Buddhism and represents the personification of perfect enlightenment. Within the esoteric traditions of the Vajrayana Buddhism, Hevajra embodies the union of wisdom and method, the fundamental principles through which awakening is achieved. The dynamic dancing posture expresses the liberated state of the enlightened mind, symbolizing the transformation of worldly passions into spiritual insight. Rather than rejecting the energies of ordinary existence, tantric practice teaches that they can be transmuted into the path to enlightenment. In this context, the deity's powerful movement signifies the complete freedom of the awakened state, transcending all worldly constraints.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze ritual conch shell, dated 12th-13th century, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 91.22.1a, b.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 27 March 2003, lot 187 Price: USD 5,975 or approx.
