拍品描述
A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, INDEPENDENT LAN NA KINGDOM, 1292-1558Expert's note: The Lan Na Kingdom was founded in 1292 by Mangrai and developed into a powerful Buddhist kingdom centered on Chiang Mai. During the period of its political independence (1292-1558), Lan Na maintained close religious and cultural connections with the Theravada Buddhist world of Sri Lanka and mainland Southeast Asia. The region developed a distinctive sculptural tradition closely related to the Chiang Saen style, with Buddha images often characterized by full oval faces, pronounced snail-shell curls, and serene, balanced proportions reflecting the spiritual ideals of northern Thai Buddhism.Northern Thailand. Finely cast, the Buddha is seated in dhyanasana on a lotus pedestal with a beaded edge raised on a broad octagonal base, holding his right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and his left in dhyana mudra, wearing monastic robes draped over his left shoulder and gathering in folds at the top of the base, his calm face with downcast eyes and full lips forming a silent smile. His hair arranged in tight snail-shell curls over the domed ushnisha topped by a jewel.Provenance: French trade. Acquired at a small estate sale in Paris, France. By repute from an old private collection, where it had apparently remained in the same family for several generations.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, tiny nicks, minor dings, light scratches, and surface corrosion. The bronze is covered overall in an exceptionally rich, naturally grown patina.Weight: 6,411 g Dimensions: Height 39.8 cmCeasing to represent the Buddha in a Khmer manner by the 13th century, the emergent Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and Lan Na developed their own emblematic Buddha images. Coded within the present figure is an intriguing multiculturalism, with a physique and iconography drawn from Indian Gupta and Pala prototypes as they filtered through Pagan and Sri Lanka. The sculpture is a classic example of the Lan Na kingdom's Phra Singh type of Buddha image. It characteristically depicts Buddha seated in 'double lotus' posture, extending his right hand to claim victory over Mara's last attempts to entrap him. Other defining features include the jewel finial above the ushnisha, the large hair curls, the robe in 'open mode', and a monastic shawl draped high over the left shoulder.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze figure of Buddha, 27 cm high, dated to the first half of the 16th century, in the State Hermitage Museum, accession number ИС-14.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams, New York, 19 March 2019, lot 876 Price: USD 10,075 or approx. EUR 11,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A copper alloy figure of Buddha, Northern Thailand, Lan Na period, 15th-early 16th century Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling and manner of casting with similar pose, hexagonal base, robe, and facial expression.
