拍品描述
CENTURYExpert's note:The present head displays features associated with the Chiang Saen style, a northern Thai sculptural tradition that flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries in the region around Chiang Saen. Buddha images of this type are recognized by their full oval faces, clearly articulated brows forming a continuous arc above the eyes, prominent yet finely cast snail-shell curls, and rather sharply defined eyelids. The style reflects a synthesis of Sukhothai elegance with earlier northern Thai and Lanna traditions, resulting in iconic images intended to embody the spiritual presence of the Enlightened One.Thailand. The oval face with a serene expression, crisply and sensitively delineated lips, a straight nose joining arched brows, the heavy-lidded eyes cast downward, framed by delicately curved eyebrows echoed by the hairline with two rows of thickly modeled snail-shell curls, flanked by ears with elongated lobes.Provenance: From an estate sale in San Rafael, California, USA. By repute acquired from a collection in the San Francisco Bay Area.Condition: Good condition with ancient wear and expected casting irregularities. Obvious losses, distinct remnants of gilding, scattered nicks and scratches, few dings, surface corrosion, and encrustations. The bronze with a naturally grown patina. A small repair to the right ear.Weight: 3,209 g (excl. stand), 7,569 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 22.2 cm (excl. stand), 46 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated wood stand. (2)Between the later 14th and the 16th centuries, the Ayutthaya Kingdom emerged as the dominant political power in mainland Southeast Asia. Building on artistic traditions established during the earlier Sukhothai Kingdom, Ayutthaya artists developed a distinctive sculptural idiom characterized by elegant, curvilinear facial contours, elongated earlobes, and gently downcast eyes conveying a composed and introspective expression.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 30 March 2006, lot 109Price: USD 11,400 or approx.
