Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna.Condition: Good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities. Some areas of the gilding and polychromies may have been refreshed in the 19th or early 20th century. Scattered scratches, nicks and dents, small losses, old repairs, extensive flaking to the gilt, and casting fissures. The figure can be removed from the base. A light crack to the tip of the flame which has been stabilized. A rich, naturally-grown, smooth patina, and areas of malachite encrustations.Weight: 33.5 kg Dimensions: Height 109 cmThe Pali literature of the Theravada tradition recounts the lineage of twenty-eight Buddhas. In countries where Theravada Buddhism is practiced by the majority of the population, such as Thailand, it is customary for devotees to pay homage to this lineage, particularly during major religious festivals held throughout the year. The Buddhavamsa, a canonical Pali text, narrates the life of the historical Buddha Gautama and the twenty-seven Buddhas who preceded him, while also foretelling the future Buddha Metteyya. The present lot represents one of these Buddhas from the lineage honored in the Theravada tradition. Such images are commonly displayed in temple settings, for example at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, where shrines dedicated to each of the Buddhas are arranged for devotional veneration, as well as at Wat Pho, one of the most renowned temples in Bangkok.Thailand's Ayutthaya kingdom was one of the most powerful forces in mainland Southeast Asia between the 14th and 18th centuries. Continuing the artistic trajectory set forth under the Sukhothai, the Theravada polity sponsored the production of Buddha images fashioned in a new distinct style. The faces display a curvilinear contour with the hairline lower, towards the sinuous brow line, accentuated by elongated ears flared at upper and lower tips. The eyes, extending evenly across the width of the face, are three-quarters closed to endow the figure with a sense of serenity that is at once inwardly directed and also engaged with the world.Literature comparison: Compare a related gilt-bronze figure of Buddha dated to the 15th century, 156.2 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1991.423.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Paris, 6 July 2022, lot 233 Price: EUR 22,680 or approx.?EUR 24,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, 17th century Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling, manner of casting, and gilding, with similar robe, facial features, and expression.
