拍品描述
China. Finely potted with deep rounded sides supported on a straight foot, delicately painted in underglaze-blue and bright enamels of apple-green, iron-red, pale yellow, and aubergine to the exterior sides with three fruiting and flowering sprays of pomegranate, peach, and finger citron, together forming the auspicious Sanduo or Three Abundances. The recessed base with an apocryphal underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Chenghua nianzhi within a double circle.Provenance: London trade.Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and expected firing irregularities, such as small bubbles and pitting. Two rim hairlines. Light surface abrasion to the foot and rim.Weight: 74 g Dimensions: Diameter 9.1 cmThis doucai bowl is a rare example of Yongzheng-period workmanship, reflecting the influence of early Ming porcelain designs and the enamels of the Chenghua reign. The Yongzheng Emperor closely guided the artistic direction of the Imperial kilns, bringing production to a particularly high standard by combining classical models of the past with contemporary enameling and firing innovation. In the present bowl, the characteristic doucai process is evident: the designs are first drawn in underglaze blue and then completed with sparse enamel colors, including iron red and translucent apple green applied above the glaze. While related to the broader wucai tradition, the decoration follows the more disciplined doucai approach, in which the blue outlines define the composition and the enamels softly fill and enrich the motifs. The present design, featuring sprays of fruiting finger citron, peach, and pomegranate, represents a variation of the auspicious sanduo ('three abundances') motif. These fruits are symbols of endless long life, an abundance of offspring, and plentiful blessings. The pomegranate, bursting with seeds, symbolizes the wish for plentiful offspring; and the finger citron, often referred to as 'the Buddha's hand,' serves as an emblem of longevity, happiness, and good fortune.Auction result comparison: Type: Near identical Auction: Christie's London, 12 May 2017, lot 430Price: GBP 1,625 or approx.
