拍品描述
A FLAMBé-GLAZED AND INSCRIBED PORCELAIN CENSER, JIAQING PERIOD, DATED 1807Expert's note: Ulrich Hausmann, the present lot's previous owner, writes in his notes how the glaze gives this censer “an almost stone-like appearance. This is an impression which is enhanced by the solid, yet elegant potting and the animal masks - a subtle reference to archaic bronze vessels.”China. The bombé body rising from a short foot to a waisted neck with lipped rim, flanked by a pair of animal mask handles, covered overall in a purplish-red glaze heavily streaked with milky-lavender, the interior with a crackled sea-green glaze. One side is incised with a lengthy inscription including a cyclical date.Inscription: To one side, 'Jiaqing dingmao qiu bayue zhi ji Nanhai Mai Baichang jingchou' ('Respectfully presented as a votive offering by Mai Baichang from Nanhai on the auspicious [day] in the eighth month of the dingmao year of Jiaqing's reign, corresponding to 1807').Provenance: Ex-Collection E. Kotanyi, Berlin, Germany. Sydney L. Moss, London, no. 6194 (label to base). Collection of Ulrich Hausmann, The Wei Liao Qing Yuan Collection (label to base), acquired from the above and thence by descent. Christie's London, 11 July 2006, lot 139, mid-estimate GBP 5,000 or approx. EUR 10,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Sotheby's London, 7 November 2012, lot 425, mid-estimate GBP 10,000 or approx. EUR 17,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Ulrich Hausmann (1947-2023) was a German architect, noted scholar, and distinguished collector whose connoisseurship helped transform the appreciation of later Chinese bronzes. Alongside his architectural career he travelled extensively in China from the 1970s onward, documenting traditional rural architecture and developing a deep interest in Chinese material culture and scholar's objects. Beginning in the 1970s, he assembled an important collection of later Chinese bronzes from the Song to Qing dynasties, a field then little studied. In October 2014, Sotheby's Hong Kong sold a part of his collection in a single-owner sale titled Later Chinese Bronzes from the Collection of Ulrich Hausmann, an extraordinary white-glove sale that achieved a total of HKD 34,000,000, setting multiple auction records. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and expected firing irregularities including small burst glaze bubbles at the rim, glaze recesses to the interior, kiln grit to base, intentional crackling to glaze on the interior and the base. The foot ring has been polished to achieve a smooth finish.Weight: 2,853 g Dimensions: Diameter 24.8 cmAuction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 22 September 2023, lot 1032 Price: USD 22,680 or approx.
