China. Finely potted, the seal is surmounted by a guardian lion seated firmly upon its haunches, the powerful body extending into a long, bushy tail, the imposing head turned slightly to the left as if glancing backward. The face is framed by a luxuriant mane and distinguished by bulging eyes and a pronounced muzzle with an open mouth revealing sharp fangs, lending the creature a vigilant and commanding presence. Covered overall in a fine glaze of soft cream-white tone.Inscriptions: The seal face with two characters in seal script. One side of the seal additionally incised with two characters, 'Yi Shi'.Provenance: The Reginald and Lena Palmer Collection, thence by descent to their son William A. Palmer, and thence by further descent. One side with an old label with typewritten inscription, 'Ch'ien Lung, 1736-1795 AD'. The Reginald and Lena Palmer Collection was one of the most important private European collections of Chinese art during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Reginald Palmer (1898-1970) was the son of W. Howard (1865-1923) and Ada Palmer (1870-1953), and his grandfather established a successful biscuit manufacturing firm known as Huntley & Palmer in 1841, which remained in the family for three generations. The constant commercial success of the firm enabled members of the family to pursue their collective passion for Chinese art. The first pieces of the Palmer Collection were assembled by Reginald's father, Howard, who kept a collection of seventeenth century Chinese porcelain in their Victorian mansion in Berkshire, where pieces of fine Chinese art had been kept even prior to its acquisition by the Palmer family. Reginald married Lena Cobham (d. 1981) in the 1920s and began collecting Ming and early Qing dynasty domestic porcelain ware, deviating from the taste of his parents who collected primarily export ware. The couple joined the Oriental Ceramic Society in the 1940s, but despite varying trends in the market and changing tastes of collectors, they continued to focus on collecting Ming and early Qing porcelain up until Reginald's death in 1970. Their important and sublime collection was hosted in over ten exhibitions by the OCS.Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear, minuscule manufacturing irregularities including a short firing line to the foot rim, tiny bubbles, traces of use including remnants of red seal paste, and small surface scratches.Weight: 118.9 gDimensions: Height 6.8 cmDehua wares produced between the late Ming and early Qing dynasties were characterized by sculptural figures and ritual or utilitarian vessels formed in a finely levigated, granular white porcelain body, covered with a glaze varying from a subtle bluish tinge to a soft, warm cream tone. The distinctive chromatic purity of these wares results from the exceptionally low concentration of iron impurities in the clay matrix. Analytical studies have indicated an iron content of approximately 0.5 percent ferric oxide, a factor crucial to the achievement of their luminous whiteness after firing.Manufactured at the Dehua kilns in Fujian province, southeastern China, these monochrome white porcelains were esteemed for their restrained aesthetic and technical refinement. In nineteenth-century Europe, they acquired the designation 'Blanc de Chine', a term coined by French connoisseurs that remains in use to describe this celebrated corpus of export and domestic production.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Dehua lion seal, dated 18th century, 7.1 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number PDF.426.
