Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 25 February 2026, based on sample number P126b73, sets the firing date of the one sample taken between 350 and 550 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.Expert's note:Fahua glazes are a distinctive type of Chinese ceramic decoration that emerged during the Ming Dynasty and gained prominence in the 15th and 16th centuries. These glazes are notable for their vibrant, jewel-toned colors and the complex technique used to apply them. Fahua wares involved outlining the design on the ceramic body with raised or incised lines of clay, which formed compartments. These compartments were then filled with different colored glazes, creating a design somewhat similar to cloisonné enamel work but adapted for ceramics. The present vase is an example of the fahua palette from the rarer group showing incised compartments only.China, 16th to 17th century. Massively potted, the body with rounded shoulders rising from a splayed foot to a waisted neck with everted rim, finely decorated in yellow, white, green, and aubergine on a turquoise ground, depicting lotus stems above crashing waves and rocks. The neck set with a pair of dragons and painted with butterflies below the ruyi-border.Condition: Expected old wear and firing irregularities including visible luting lines to the body and neck. Areas of repair to the neck, rim, and handles. Some minor losses to the enamels and base. Overall commensurate with size and age.Provenance:- Collection of Adolphe?Adam Worch, Paris.- Charles Vignier et André Portier, H?tel Drouot, 30 November-2 December 1921, lot 109.- Galerie Vandermeersch, Paris, acquired from the above.- Robert Rousset, Compagnie de la Chine et des Indes, inventory number 13345, Paris, acquired from the above in 1942 and thence by descent.- Bonhams Paris, 9 June 2023, lot 14- The private collection of Jules Speelman, London, acquired from the above. - Sotheby's London, 6 November 2024, lot 157, mid-estimate GBP 20,000 or approx.
