拍品描述
China, early 18th century. The slender ovoid body rising to a waisted neck with flaring rim, superbly painted in bright enamels, depicting Liu Hai on a rocky outcrop holding a string of cash to tease his toad companion below, and He Xiangu in a raft suspending a flower basket, accompanied by an attendant observing the scene with amusement. The neck of the vase is similarly decorated with a flying crane and swirling clouds. The base with an underglaze-blue double circle.Provenance: Collection of Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964), and thence by descent in the same family. Zacke Vienna, 16 June 2018, lot 120, sold for EUR 9,000 or EUR 12,000 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Collection of Fred Gelz, Saarbrücken, Germany, acquired from the above and thence by descent. Alfred William Cowperthwaite (1890-1964) was a Canadian collector of Chinese porcelain and works of art, who became good friends with the British anthropologist and museum curator Harry Geoffrey Beasley (1881-1939). Cowperthwaite was a contributor to the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum established by Beasley and his wife Irene, and acquired a number of objects from Beasley's collection shortly after his death. Fred Gelz was a German collector and passionate connoisseur. His vast collection included Chinese porcelain, Himalayan sculptures and paintings, and important European works of art.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including dark spots, pooling to the interior, and minor pitting. The base drilled with and associated old fill.Weight: 3,196 Dimensions: Height 46 cmLiu Hai and his toad, originally derived from Yuan-dynasty Taoist fairy tales and regarded as folklore, became a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The story of Liu Hai is frequently told as 'Liu Hai playing with the Golden Toad'. However, there is a hidden meaning here: The Chinese word for 'toad' is chanchu. Sometimes, Chinese will only pronounce the first character chan. In some Chinese dialects, the character chan has a pronunciation very similar to qian which means 'coin'. Therefore, a storyteller reciting 'Liu Hai playing with the Golden Toad' could also be heard by listeners as 'Liu Hai playing with the gold coins'.He?Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals, is a legendary figure in Chinese Daoist tradition celebrated for her role in conquering evil and bestowing blessings. She is typically depicted as a graceful young woman, holding a lotus flower. According to certain Daoist and folkloric accounts such as the 'Biographies of Immortals' by Xian Zhuan, He Xiangu was a mortal woman from Lingling, present-day Hunan, who began her path to immortality after receiving a vision instructing her to consume powdered mica to become immune from death and to vow to remain unmarried. This gave her spiritual powers and freed her from the need for ordinary food.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related famille-verte baluster vase, dated to the Kangxi period, 43 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 61.200.67.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's London, 9 November 2010, lot 352 Price: GBP 32,450 or approx.
