China. Ink and watercolors on paper. With a silk brocade and wood cover, each leaf is framed by a band of white silk brocade and features scenes with birds or floral subjects.The leaves comprising:a magpie on a blossoming prunus branch looking downa black crested Mynah bird on a prunus brancha pair of long tailed swallows perched on a willow branch with prunus blossoming belowa spray of white and red chrysanthemumsa brown and white feathered bird perched on bamboo beside red berriesa pair of speckled brown sparrows on a blossoming peach brancha light-vented bulbul (baitouweng) on a prunus branch twisting the head back to clean its plumagea spray of pink and red peoniesInscriptions: To the cover, 'Zhou Xiaoshan Yigui bird and flower album, Sun Zhitong collection' and a red stamp, 'verified'. The magpie painting signed 'Painted respectfully by your servant, Zou Yigui' followed by two seal marks 'Xiaoshan', 'Yugui zhi yin', and one seal mark to the lower right corner 'Sun Zhitong'. The other paintings, each with a seal mark to the lower right or left corner, 'Sun Zhitong'.Provenance: The Sun Zhitong collection, probably formed in the late 19th to mid-20th century. The collection of Stephan Stein, United Kingdom, acquired around the mid-20th century, and thence by descent to his son, Dr. George Stein and his wife, and thence by further descent in the family.Stephan Stein (1907-1995) was a pioneering nuclear engineer in radiotherapy technologies working for the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell Atomic Energy Research Institute. While engaged in scientific research, Mr. Stein also cultivated a significant collection of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, amassing a series of rare and valuable works over the years. Condition: Overall fair condition. The cover with tears and losses to the fabric. The leaves with old wear, scattered insect activity, browning, creasing, losses, light scratches, few water marks, minor tears and touchups, and little staining.Dimensions: Size 37.8 x 26.8 cm (the cover), 29.1 x 22.4 cm (the paintings)The final page of the album consists of a handwritten note by the collector Sun Zhitong detailing the biography of Zhou Yigui, dated to the winter of the year of Wuzi (1888 or 1948).Zou Yigui (1686-1772), also known by his style name Yuanbao and his sobriquets Xiaoshan, was a renowned Chinese painter during the Qing dynasty. Born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, he became famous for his paintings of flowers and landscapes and was commissioned to paint for the imperial family.
