(2)Known generally as shinü hua (portraits of ladies) or meiren hua (portraits of beauties), these paintings have been a favored theme in Chinese art since the 8th century. By the Tang dynasty, a growing interest in depicting daily life in the palace led to the emergence of a new category of painting focused on beautiful women. Portraits of elegant court ladies engaged in leisure activities became especially popular. These dignified female figures, often depicted as idealized types rather than specific individuals, reflected the contemporary standards of feminine beauty.Qing court paintings of palace ladies were typically the work of anonymous artists, executed predominantly in the gongbi zhongcai technique (fine line and heavy color), which is especially suited to capturing the intricate refinement of clothing, interiors, and decorative elements, as demonstrated in the present lot.Literature comparison:Compare a related ink and watercolor silk painting of a woman fantasizing, by Leng Mei, dated c. 1700-1750, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1966.479.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 2 May 2025, lot 994Price: HKD 352,800 or approx.
