拍品描述
'A FALCON PERCHED ON A ROCK' BY JIN MENGSHI (1869-1952), DATED 1925China. Black ink on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll in a silk brocade frame and with two hardwood handles.Painted in vivid brushstrokes, depicting a falcon perched atop a tall rock partly overgrown with tufts of grass, the bird shown alert with its head slightly turned, the plumage rendered with fine tonal variations and graduated feather detailing, the composition emphasizing the contrast between the rugged rock and the lively presence of the bird.Expert's note: The inscription refers to Bangeng Caolu, which does not denote a geographic location but rather a studio name. The term caolu, literally meaning “thatched cottage,” was traditionally used by Chinese literati to evoke the image of a humble scholarly retreat, alluding to ideals of withdrawal, learning, and cultivated simplicity. Such studio names frequently appear in inscriptions and seals on paintings and calligraphy.Inscriptions: To the upper left, 'In the eighth month of the year of Yichou (corresponding to 1925), painted by Wu Jun Jin Mengshi in Bangeng Caolu' with three seal marks 'Caolu yin', 'Mengshi', and '[X]Luke'. With two further seal marks to the bottom left and top right.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, assembled from 1965 onwards and thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna.Condition: Good condition with minor wear, some creasing, few stains, browning, tiny tears, little foxing, and few watermarks. Minute touchups are possible.Dimensions: Image size 124.5 x 41.6 cm, size incl. frame 222 x 54.5 cmJin Mengshi (1869- ca. 1952) was a distinguished painter and calligrapher active during the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic period. Born in Wuxian, Jiangsu Province, he was a member of the Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Research Association. Renowned for his bold and expressive brushwork, Jin's artistic oeuvre encompasses depictions of human figures, flowers, birds, and animals, characterized by his unrestrained style and dynamic compositions.Literature comparison:Compare a related painting of two birds perched on a rock, by Jin Mengshi, in the National Palace Museum, reference number 購畫000768N000000000.
