The temples are known for the harmonious integration of sculpture with their architectural surfaces, which are profusely carved with anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic motifs depicting sacred and secular themes. Sculptures portraying acts of worship, clan and minor deities, and couples in union all reflect the sacred belief system of the period. Other themes mirror social life through depictions of domestic scenes, teachers and disciples, dancers and musicians, and amorous couples. While the erotic sculptures of Khajuraho are widely known, they constitute less than 10% of the temple's artwork; within this broader decorative program animals—including horses—appear in a variety of narrative and symbolic contexts, occasionally even within the complex erotic imagery for which the site is famous. The Chandela dynasty became a great power in Central and Northern India during the 10th century. Thereafter successive rulers built magnificent temples at Khajuraho and elsewhere in their realm, to commemorate their military victories. As their influence expanded, their exquisite architectural style became admired across much of India, as indeed, it is now around the world. Chandela kings commissioned some of the finest temples in India. The best known of these today are in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, now a village but once the Chandela capital. Other temples, no longer standing, were located throughout their realm.Once the capital of the Chandela dynasty, Khajuraho flourished as a cultural and architectural center in the 10th-11th centuries. The Kandariya Mahadeva, dedicated to Shiva and built during the reign of King Vidyadhara, stands as the finest example of Chandela artistry. In recognition of its remarkable preservation and its testimony to medieval Indian creativity, the Khajuraho temple complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Of the 85 temples built under Chandela patronage, about 30 survive, celebrated for their intricate sculpture and mastery of the Nagara style, enriched with distinctive regional flourishes.
