拍品描述
China, 18th-19th century. Each of ovoid form and fitted with a slightly domed cover with countersunk center. The wood of an attractive grain and warm color. (2)Provenance: West Berkshire trade, by repute acquired from a private collection in Yorkshire, United Kingdom.Condition: Very good condition with light wear, traces of use, few natural age cracks, small surface scratches, scattered stains.Weight: 641.2 g (total)Dimensions: Diameter 12.3 cm (each)'Weiqi', more commonly known in the West under its Japanese name 'go', originated in ancient China and was one of the four accomplishments that a Chinese scholar had to practice. There is a tangle of conflicting popular and scholarly anecdotes attributing its invention to the two earliest emperors in China, Yao and Shun, an Imperial vassal, Wucao, or a court astrologer in the Western Zhou Dynasty. It is generally agreed that 'weiqi' is more than 2,500 years old, which makes it the world's oldest strategic board game continuously played to the present day.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related pair of wood weiqi boxes and covers, dated to the 18th century, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number FE.26-1999.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 16 September 2014, lot 558Mid-Estimate: USD 6,500 or approx. EUR 7,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A pair of boxwood weiqi boxes and covers, Qing dynasty, dated Guangxu 7th year, corresponding to 1881 Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, manner of carving, and material.
