AN INSCRIBED 'LANTINGJI XU' FOUR-PANEL COROMANDEL LACQUER SCREENChina, 18th-19th century. Finely carved and colorfully lacquered to each side, the front with a continuous lively palace scene populated by numerous figures, above four rectangular panels enclosing playful boys strolling along a riverside promenade beneath pine trees. The vertical borders are adorned with lotus blossoms and scrolling motifs, while the horizontal borders feature leafy branches with flowerheads set within cartouches against diapered grounds. The reverse with a lengthy inscription from the Lantingji Xu above antique treasures and precious vessels filled with auspicious flowers, all framed by further floral scroll borders.Provenance: From an old private collection on the French Riviera and thence by descent. Condition: Condition commensurate with type and age. The lacquer with expected wear, crackling, flaking, chips with associated touchups, minor nicks, areas of fading, and scattered losses, including to the metal fittings. The wood with natural age cracks. Overall, the surface presents a pleasing, well-developed patina.Weight: 26.6 kg Dimensions: Size 160 x 182.5 cmThe inscription on the reverse (from the Lantingji Xu) reads:In the ninth year of Yonghe, in the cycle of Guichou, in the third month of spring, we gathered at the Orchid Pavilion at the foot of the Kuaiji Mountains to perform the purification ritual. All the scholars had come, young and old gathered together. The place was surrounded by high mountains and steep peaks, lush forests and tall bamboo; clear streams and rushing waters wound around us like a ribbon. We used the winding waterways for the 'flowing cup game' and sat down along the shore. Although there was no sound of stringed or wind instruments, with each cup of wine and each poem we were able to freely exchange our silent thoughts. On that day, the sky was clear, the air was fresh, and a gentle breeze blew softly. When you look up into the vastness of the universe and down at the abundance of earthly things, your eyes can wander and your heart can unfold-it is enough to experience the joys of seeing and hearing, truly a source of joy. When people come together, their lives pass in an instant. Some share their innermost thoughts and find each other in conversation in the quiet space. In memory of my esteemed elder brother Yanbo.Respectfully dedicated by Ji Yuanlu. The Lantingji Xu (Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion) is one of the most celebrated masterpieces of Chinese calligraphy, penned by Wang Xizhi in 353 AD during a gathering of scholars at the Orchid Pavilion near Shaoxing. Composed in running script (xingshu), the text elegantly weaves personal reflection with natural imagery, conveying the ephemeral nature of life and the joy of friendship. Revered for its rhythmic fluidity and expressive brushwork, the Lantingji Xu has been regarded since the Tang dynasty as the paragon of Chinese cursive calligraphy. Although the original hand is now lost, its influence endures through later copies and engraved rubbings. The present lot belongs to a renowned group of screens commissioned as auspicious birthday gifts for public officials, particularly popular during the Kangxi period (1662-1722). The color and condensed composition are characteristics of the kuancai technique, which involves carving out of a smooth surface, revealing the ground coating, and then coloring with oil or lacquer pigments.Coromandel lacquer denotes a distinctive category of East Asian lacquerwork associated with deeply carved and richly painted panels prized in both domestic and international markets from the seventeenth century onward. The term derives from the Coromandel Coast, the principal entrep?t through which these screens were exported to European and Southeast Asian traders. Characterized by incised decoration filled with polychrome pigments and gilding against a dark lacquer ground, such works depict landscapes, courtly gatherings, and auspicious imagery. Under the Qing court, Coromandel lacquer attained exceptional technical and artistic refinement, with monumental folding screens commissioned by the imperial household and elite literati as statements of status, erudition, and global engagement.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 7 May 2020, lot 56 Price: USD 30,000 or approx.
