拍品描述
Finely carved to depict a fierce manifestation of Shiva, the deity with large bulging eyes set beneath furrowed brows and a third eye centered on the forehead. His teeth are bared in a grimacing expression, framed by an incised moustache and beard, the ears flanked by coiled serpent earrings. The flaming hair is swept back from the face and surmounted by a five-leaf tiara adorned with skulls, with diminutive sun and moon emblems interspersed among the thick locks. Below, the powerful neck is encircled by a narrow torque.Provenance: From a private collection in Paris, France. The back with an old inscribed paper label. Condition: Very good condition with expected ancient wear, signs of tactile worship, minor chips to edges, surface scratches, remnants of ritual pigment.Weight: 5 kg Dimensions: Height 25.5 cmBhairava is a fearsome manifestation of Lord Shiva representing absolute destruction, transformation, and liberation from illusion. As a guardian deity, he is worshiped for protection, removing fear, and overcoming obstacles. He is strongly associated with Tantra, the Kapalika tradition, and is revered as the guardian of Kashi (Varanasi). The present head bears a close resemblance to Bhairava masks, not of the kind worn but kept on display and used for special annual festivals dedicated to Indra. On the third night of the Indrajata chang, a local beer or spirit, was poured through a spout placed through the mouth of the mask for revelers who would imbibe the liquid under the auspices of receiving a divine blessing.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 16 September 2014, lot 279Price: USD 12,500 or approx.
