China. Ink on paper. Finely painted to depict a bird perched on a small rock and raising its head towards a large lotus blossom and leaf billowing in the wind.Inscriptions: Center right, dated 'on a winter day in the year of Jiaxu (corresponding to 1694)' and signed 'by Bada Shanren'. One seal, 'Bahai'.The lower left with a collector's seal, 'Yang Shi […] Zhencang', and the lower right with two collector's seals, one reading 'Chen Jiawu Zhengcang Yin' and the other associated with the mid-Qing collector Liu Shu (1759-1816), 'Liu Shi Hanbizhuang Yin'.Provenance:- Collection of Liu Shu (1759-1816), China, and thence by descent.- The collection of Robert Rousset, Paris, France, and thence by descent in the family.- Martin Doustar, Brussels, Belgium, acquired from the above in 2018.Liu Shu (1759-1816), also known as Hanbizhuang (Master of Hanbi), was a native of Wuxian (present-day Suzhou, Jiangsu). A master of appraisal, he amassed a rich collection of ancient texts, calligraphy, and paintings. His residence, originally named Dongyuan, was renovated in 1798 and renamed Hanbizhuang. The seal 'Liu Shi Hanbizhuang Yin' on this work therefore indicates its acquisition occurred after 1798, roughly one century after its creation.Robert Rousset was a former French radio officer in the merchant navy, who became one of the most prominent pioneers of the Chinese art market in Paris. As a child, his father, an insurance agent, would take him to H?tel Drouot where he started to buy at a very young age. His true passion for Asian art started in the 1920s, when he was sent on a mission to Beijing after the decline of the Qing empire, along with Osvald Sirén, the famous Swedish Asian art historian and connoisseur. He then became one of the main contributors of Chinese antiques for the Compagnie de la Chine et des Indes, founded in Paris in the early 20th century by the Blazy brothers. After the 1929 stock market crash, he had the opportunity to acquire the company. With his sister Suzanne in charge of the porcelain, they developed the business and became one of the most important dealers in France, selling pieces to the greatest museums, including the Musée Guimet and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With no children of his own, Robert took his nephew Jean-Pierre (1936-2021) under his wing and began grooming him to eventually take over the gallery. He loved to wander with Jean-Pierre through the gallery's exhibitions and storerooms, telling stories about each piece while cultivating his protégé's eye. Jean-Pierre was also sent by his uncle to train with the great expert in Asian art and Robert's close friend, Michel Beurdeley, whose numerous publications are still commonly referenced today. When Robert passed away, his private collection was divided between Jean-Pierre and his sister, Anne-Marie, whose part was sold with great success after her death in 2019.Martin Doustar is a Brussels-based art dealer and collector whose career spans more than two decades. He began his professional journey in the early 2000s with a focus on Modern Art, developing a keen interest in the ways early twentieth-century artists were influenced by 'primitive' art from Africa and Oceania. Over time, his connoisseurship expanded into archaeological and ethnographic fields, with particular expertise in the ancient arts of the Pacific, Africa, and Pre-Columbian America, while also encompassing Asian material culture and modern masterpieces. He is the author of several catalogs and has organized thematic exhibitions on a wide range of subjects.Condition: Very good condition with some old wear; the lower right corner with a small touchup. There is a remote possibility of further restoration, as is often encountered in Kangxi period paintings that survive in well-preserved condition. Any such intervention, if present, would appear to have been carried out at a professional conservation level and is not visible to the naked eye. (2)Zhu Da (1626-1705), known as Bada Shanren, was one of the most original and influential painters of the early Qing dynasty. A descendant of the Ming imperial family, he withdrew from public life following the dynasty's fall and later emerged as a monk and artist, developing a highly personal visual language. Bada Shanren is celebrated for his spare yet intensely expressive compositions, particularly depictions of birds, fish, rocks, and flowers rendered in bold ink with striking economy of means. His works are characterized by asymmetry, dramatic empty space, and a charged simplicity. His distinctive treatment of eyes, often exaggerated, vacant, or piercing, imbues his subjects with an ambiguous emotional presence that has been interpreted as both ironic and introspective. In addition to his achievements in painting, Bada Shanren was an accomplished calligrapher.
