拍品描述
A JAIN SANDSTONE STELE OF MAHAVIRA, MADHYA PRADESH OR RAJASTHAN, 10TH-11TH CENTURY India. Carved standing upright in kayotsarga on a tall pedestal centered by addorsed lions flanked by worshipers, the arms hanging to his knees, the face with heavy-lidded eyes below arched eyebrows, the mouth with full lips, flanked by elongated earlobes, backed by a halo. The deity framed by an elaborate niche populated by seated and standing jinas, separated by a vyala standing on a recumbent elephant head, each reserved within a pillared nook, all topped by lustrating elephants.Provenance: From the private collection of Alain Finard, Paris, France. Alain Finard was an antiquities dealer whose atelier, Galerie Alain et Gerard, was an institution on Rue de Beaune since the late 1970s. In the 1980s, Finard acquired a second space across the street: a flat on the first floor that he used as a gallery to display his rarest pieces. There he hosted collectors and aesthetes such as Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, Hubert de Givenchy, and Rudolf Nureyev.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, nicks, scratches, small chips, a small section with adhesive residue.Dimensions: Height 78 cm (excl. stand), 90 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated metal stand. (2)Jinas are depicted in only two poses: Kayostarga, standing, or dhyani, seated in meditation, and due to the identical poses and expressions they are distinguished mainly by their vahanas, or vehicles, appearing at the feet of the figures or carved on to the pedestals. In the present example, the specific identity of the Jina cannot be determined with absolute certainty. Nonetheless, Mahavira, the twenty-fourth tirthankara, is most frequently depicted in the kayotsarga posture. Given the prevalence of this association, an attribution to Mahavira is therefore the most plausible. This stele bears close stylistic affinities to Jain sculptures from the temple complexes at Khajuraho, an important center of Jain and Hindu art between the 10th and early 12th centuries. Jain temples at Khajuraho are distinguished by their refined figural modeling, balanced proportions, and intricately carved architectural frames populated with subsidiary figures, animals, and auspicious motifs. The present sculpture shares these characteristics in the elegant treatment of the standing Jina, the symmetrical arrangement of attendant figures, and the densely articulated stele crowned by tiered registers and animal imagery. Such compositional richness and sculptural clarity are hallmarks of the Khajuraho ateliers and suggest a close relationship to this celebrated artistic tradition.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related sandstone stele of a tirthankara, Madhya Pradesh, dated to the 10th century, in the Khajuraho Museum. Compare a closely related stele of Neminatha, 83.2 cm high, dated to the 11th century, in the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and illustrated in the Virtual Museum of Images & Sounds, accession number ACSAA_13059.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Paris, 7 June 2011, lot 353Price: EUR 46,600 or approx.
