拍品描述
TAXILA, 1ST-2ND CENTURY ADKushan Empire. Separately cast in three sections hinged together, with a loose pin serving as the clasp, each element is worked in repoussé. The principal face of the bracelet takes the form of a large medallion centered by a lotus bloom, set with a finely molded glass paste head of Buddha in high relief. The petals are interspersed with prominent bosses and framed by a beaded rim along the outer edge. The broad sides of the band are similarly enriched with granulated beadwork forming confronting scrolling spade motifs, divided by thick bosses and enclosed within matching beaded borders, creating a cohesive and architectonic design.Provenance: The Collection of a Central Asian Royal Family, by the mid-1990s. The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum, acquired from the above in Paris, France. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. In December 2025, he was awarded medals of national recognition by the Royal Government of Cambodia for his exceptional contributions to the scientific study, preservation, and international understanding of Angkor and Koh Ker. Zelnik founded the Hungarian Southeast Asian Institute in the early 2000s. The Institute supported a range of research programs at Angkor and Koh Ker, including archaeological surveys, light detection and ranging ( LiDAR) investigations, epigraphic studies, and historical research. These efforts have contributed to a deeper understanding of the Angkorian empire, the pre-Angkor period, and Cambodia's prehistoric times. Research supported by the institute played a key role in raising international awareness of Koh Ker and led to its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.Condition: Good condition with expected ancient wear, casting irregularities, minor losses, small tears and minute shallow fissures, light dings, surface scratches, insignificant nicks, and soil encrustations.Weight: 120 gDimensions: Length 8.5 cm, Diameter of the centerpiece 7.5 cmThis fine gold bracelet belongs to the rare corpus of surviving ornaments from ancient South Asia. The refined work, employing repoussé, sheet gold, and fine granulation, reflects technical mastery that ultimately traces back to Hellenistic traditions of Greece. In the Gandhara region, within the wider Kushan Empire, such craftsmanship absorbed Greek stylistic and technical influence while also developing a distinct local character. Comparable examples have been discovered at Taxila in present-day Pakistan and in Tumuli in northern Afghanistan, highlighting the wide networks and cultural exchanges of the Kushan period.Expert's note on metallurgy:XRF readings taken on both the decorative face and the hoop identified a highly consistent Au-Ag alloy with minor Cu, measuring approximately Au 63-66%, Ag 31-32%, and Cu ~1%. Published analyses of Hellenistic gold jewellery commonly report Au contents of roughly 55-90%, Ag contents of about 10-40%, and Cu typically below 5%, placing the present composition comfortably within these documented ranges. The close similarity between the two readings indicates a uniform alloy throughout the bangle. The absence of detectable Zn, Sn, or Hg is fully compatible with historically produced gold jewellery. Overall, the results are consistent with ancient gold alloys encountered in Hellenistic and Central Asian metalwork.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related gold bracelet from Taxila, dated 1st century AD, in the National Museum, New Delhi, accession number 49.262/3. Compare a related garnet-inlaid gold repoussé pendant with Hariti from Taxila, dated 3rd-4th century AD, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number IS.9-1948. Compare a related later Taxila gold repousse buckle with the gods Hariti and Pancika, 4th century, 4.4 cm wide, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number IS.10-1948.
