A BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, ANGKOR PERIOD, KHMER EMPIRE, 12TH-13TH CENTURYScientific Analysis Report: An XRF laboratory test report issued by Hebolabo, Pelt, Belgium, on 12 March 2025, based on verification analysis by EDXRF (energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry), concludes that the statue “is made of high leaded brass, originated in medieval Khmer Empire”. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.Metallurgy: Analysis indicates an alloy composed of approximately 49% copper, 24.5% zinc, 22% lead, and minor tin, identifying the metal as a high-leaded brass rather than a classical tin bronze. This composition is technically consistent with historical Southeast Asian casting practices of the period and presents no metallurgical features that would contradict a 12th-13th century Khmer attribution.Seated in ardha padmasana on a tiered rectangular plinth, the lowered hands holding a broken tusk and noose, and the raised arms clasped around an attribute and mala. Adorned with jewelry and sinuous serpents wrapped around its torso, the elephant-headed deity is clad in a short sampot elegantly tied with a stylized tang to the back. The serene face with a curling trunk, flaring ears, and wide eyes, the hair secured in a conical chignon, backed by a tiara.Provenance: From the private collection of Darwin Freeman, collected between 1968 and 1971, and thence by descent within the same family. Born 1946 in Idaho, United States, Darwin Freeman was a member of the armed forces and later became an avid collector. He met his wife in the mid-1960s, and the pair later relocated to her hometown of Innsbruck, Austria. In 1967, Freeman was drafted into the US Army and served in Germany and Thailand. While he was stationed at the Embassy in Bangkok, between 1969 and 1971, he actively began engaging in the exploration and collection of ancient bronzes and other works of art. Upon completing his duty, Freeman arranged for his collection to be shipped to Austria, where it remained in storage until this day. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, small nicks, dents and losses, possibly minor repairs, surface corrosion and soil encrustations. Under strong UV light no restorations are apparent; however, given the depth and density of the naturally developed patina, small interventions may be concealed beneath the surface. The bronze is covered with extensive malachite and cuprite encrustations. Weight: 14.7 kg Dimensions: Height 38 cmA popular Hindu deity, Ganesha was introduced to Cambodian artists in the 7th century. Over the next five centuries, India's chubby elephant icon was transformed into a sleek, anthropomorphic figure. He sits meditatively in a classic lotus position, holding his own broken tusk.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze figure of Ganesha, Siem Reap province, Puok district, Angkor, dated to the 13th century, in the National Museum of Cambodia, formerly in the Musée Guimet, accession number Ga.5987.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Zacke, Vienna, 16 October 2021, lot 559Price: EUR 32,864 or approx.
