Vanderven Oriental Art is a Dutch gallery specializing in antique Asian art, founded in 1968 by siblings Clemens and Bea van der Ven. They opened a general antiques shop in the center of the medieval town of 's-Hertogenbosch, and their keen eyes quickly ensured a loyal client base and excellent reputation. The gallery is now run by their nephew Floris van der Ven, who joined the business in 1996 and took over from his aunt and uncle in 2012. Today Vanderven Oriental Art is considered one of the world's leading international dealers in its field. Feng-Chun Ma is a distinguished scholar, collector, and dealer of Chinese art with more than thirty-five years of experience. Born in the Netherlands to Chinese parents, she was influenced early on by her father's efforts to promote Chinese culture in Europe. Her professional career in the Asian art world began in 1982 at Christie's Amsterdam, after which she served as Head of the Chinese and Japanese Department at Sotheby's Amsterdam, before establishing her own dealership, Feng-Chun Ma Chinese & Japanese Art, in 2003. Over the course of her career, she has assembled a renowned private collection centered on the motif of 'boys at play' (yingxitu), comprising rare and well-provenanced works ranging from Song dynasty ceramics to Ming and Qing porcelain, jade, bronzes, snuff bottles, and textiles, reflecting both her scholarly insight and connoisseurship. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including minor glaze crazing mostly to the interior. The foot with an old small chip.Weight: 242 g Dimensions: Diameter 11 cmIn Chinese art, the image of a boy holding a lotus is a richly layered symbol of auspicious wishes. The lotus (lian) is a homophone for 'continuous' and when paired with a child it conveys the blessing of continuous male offspring (lian sheng gui zi), expressing hopes for fertility and lineage continuity. The motif also carries Buddhist associations, as the lotus signifies purity and spiritual awakening, while the child evokes innocence and renewal. Over time, especially from the Song dynasty onward, the boy-and-lotus image became a popular decorative theme across painting, porcelain, jade, and scholar's objects, embodying ideals of fertility, moral virtue, and future success, particularly the aspiration that sons would grow to achieve scholarly distinction and official rank.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related blue and white box and cover depicting the same subject, 10.4 cm diameter, in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, accession number 30624.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's London, 7 November 2012, lot 41Price: GBP 17,500 or approx.
