Calcification and corresponding surface alterations. Weight: 60.8 gDimensions: Height 11.7 cmThe Eastern Zhou and the Western Han periods represent a moment of intense cultural interaction between the Chinese and the nomads of the North. This interaction can be seen in the arts from the adoption by the Chinese of certain types of objects, decorative motifs and stylistic solutions typical of the artifacts of nomadic peoples. The belt hook illustrated here is one such example of such borrowings, ornaments customarily used by the mounted tribesmen transformed into luxury items during the Eastern Zhou period in China.Similar to other jades made by Chinese craftsmen following foreign prototypes, this belt-hook is a copy in jade of an ornament commonly made in metal, often inlaid with precious and semiprecious stones. The feline-looking dragon with its body twisted like a figure eight is often seen in metal belt-hooks. What makes this belt hook unique is not just the fine execution and rendering of the details, but also the additional engraved pattern of sinuous lines on the underside of the hook which adds refinement to an already elegant object.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 3 December 2021, lot 2770Price: HKD 3,125,000 or approx.
