拍品描述
China, 1279-1368. Of baluster form, rising from a ring foot to broad, rounded shoulders before contracting toward the mouth, and surmounted by a shallow, flat cover. Both jar and lid are covered in a pale celadon glaze of soft green tone, with irregular tobi seiji splashes of iron-brown glaze falling freely across the shoulders and body. The glaze thins at the edges and foot, revealing the warm buff-colored stoneware beneath.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired on the 18th September 1977 in Amsterdam and in the collection for 49 years, according to the Myers ledger.Condition: Good condition with old wear and firing flaws, including a firing crack to the rim as well as few chips and fritting, small pitting, fine crackling, and encrustations to the foot.Weight: 376 g (total) Dimensions: Height 7.6 cm (excl. cover), 9 cm (incl. cover), Diameter 10.7 cmThe present jar belongs to a group of important type of Longquan ware decorated with ironbrown spots which has been much admired by the Japanese and is usually known by its Japanese name tobi seiji. Tobi seiji is famed for its rarity, there has been only a handful of tobi seiji ware published. The beauty of tobi seiji lies primarily in the rich dark brown spots that create a striking visual impact on the otherwise subtle celadon surface. In fact, the name tobi seiji, literally 'flying [spot] green ware' in Japanese, was given by ancient Japanese tea masters for the dramatic appearance of iron spots (Kobayashi Hitoshi, 'Research on National Treasure Tobi Seiji Vase', Longquanyao ciqi yanjiu, Beijing, 2013, p. 404). Such spots were added, using a brush, to the surface of the unfired glaze before the pieces were fired.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related lidded jar, dated to 14th century, 7 cm (high), in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number C.214&A-1923.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's London, 11 May 2022, lot 40Price: GBP 6,300 or approx.
