拍品描述
China, 18th-19th century. Of circular form, finely carved in high relief on one side with two youthful dragons (chilong) writhing across the surface, one grasping in its jaws the long, bifurcated tail of the other. The reverse decorated with an array of raised dots, framed by plain borders along the outer and inner rims. The disc pierced with a central circular aperture. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of an icy white tone, with subtle russet shadings and cloudy inclusions.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and inherent natural imperfections, including small fissures. A small section of the outer rim may have been slightly reduced. The dragon bodies with traces of internal mineral accretion, visible under UV light examination. Few minuscule nicks and faint surface scratches.Weight: 84.3 gDimensions: Diameter 7.1 cmThe present disc was inspired by archaic jade prototypes. One of the characteristics of Chinese philosophic and artistic tradition is a great reverence for antiquity. Aesthetic sensibilities inherited from earlier periods are often reinterpreted in the works of art of subsequent dynasties. Scholars generally agree that the tradition of archaism originated in the Song dynasty (960-1279). From that time forward, the desire of the jade artist to emulate the past became a dominant artistic ideology.Literature comparison:Compare a related archaistic jade disc (bi with chilong, dated to the 19th century, in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1852,0708.1.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 20 September 2023, lot 840 Price: USD 12,065 or approx.
