拍品描述
China, 206 BC-220 AD. Finely carved in openwork with three sinuous chilong and a dragon encircling an archer's ring, their faces rendered with almond-shaped eyes, snarling mouths, sharp fangs, and horns, and their bodies detailed with claws and curling wings. The semi-translucent stone is near-white with cloudy inclusions, transitioning to russet and mottled brown tones, with russet veining and creamy-white areas.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, few small nicks to the rims, and natural fissures. Some traces of burial, such as expected weathering and erosion, minuscule losses, and microscopic soil encrustations. Some natural alteration to the jade. Weight: 353 gDimensions: Length 13.7 cmExpert's note: The oval shape of this pendant is derived from an archer's ring worn to protect the thumb of the archer when drawing the string of a bow. Such rings were documented in the late Shang period (13th-11th centuries BC), but it was during the Han dynasty that the typical oblong ring was transformed, becoming the shield-shape central element of small elaborate pendants richly decorated with dragons.Literature comparison:Compare a related celadon and russet jade 'she' pendant with dragons, dated Han dynasty, 7.8 cm long, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, accession number 故00084801. Compare a related jade pendant with dragons, dated Western Han, 5 cm long, in the Xuzhou Museum, accession number 04658.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 4 December 2024, lot 9454Price: HKD 216,000 or approx. Note the size (4.2 cm).
