拍品描述
Japan, 19th century. Well-potted, with deep, rounded sides resting on a short, slightly tapered foot with a recessed base. The interior painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a large leaping carp, its scaled body minutely detailed with a wave-like pattern, ascending through the turbulent waters of a waterfall, which form luminous foaming crests. The exterior left undecorated, finished with a clear white glaze.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing-inherent irregularities, including light pitting, small burst bubbles and scattered areas of glaze recess. Few minor nicks and shallow surface scratches. Weight: 5.1 kgDimensions: Height 10.1 cm, Diameter 46.3 cmThe carp is associated with good fortune and perseverance in Asian lore. Although the carp lives primarily in quiet waters, its symbolic meanings have led to a Japanese design convention of showing the fish arching upward, often mounting waterfalls.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related blue and white porcelain dish with carp ascending a waterfall, Edo period, 19th century, 31.8 cm diameter, in the Tokyo National Museum, accession number G-4497.
